Territory

The territory of Tortona lies at the centre of many hills and has always been considered a boundary territory. Situated in the most outlying north-eastern strip between Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Liguria, it has always been an important junction of roads and people. Tortona is at the centre of this geographical area.

It is a particularly fertile area, ideally suited to the cultivation of vines, as evidenced by the findings of wine amphorae dating back to the ancient Romans as well as in the Middle Ages of the a wine press in the convent of the Sisters of Sant'Eufemia, which goes back to 1198. Viticulture represents one of the strongest voices in the local economy, contributing decisively to the typical characteristics of the landscape.

By virtue of the agronomic, climatic and ecological potential of the soil, fine wines are obtained which respect the variety of grapes present in the Tortonese vine: Barbera, Timorasso, Cortese and Dolcetto.

What makes the soil so precious is its rich productivity and biodiversity. Fruit growing thrives on the hills of the Lower Curone Valley and at the foot of valley. Production includes succulent peaches, strawberries and cherries.

The territory is steeped in history, culture, natural beauty, flavours and art in which the customs and traditions of four Italian regions fuse. Throughout the territory there are tangible signs of this heritage in its valleys, its ancient hamlets, villages and towns dotted around the hills and in the lower valley.
Gravel, sand, silt and clay alternate in the soils of the Piedmont Tertiary Basin and with marine formations (Ligurian-Piedmontese Oceanic Domain): the area consists mainly of sedimentary, marlyclay- gravel, sand, silt and clay-rich in lithium which is responsible for the tangy flavour of the wines.
The climate is characterized by cold winters, with average annual temperatures around 12°C and by average annual rainfall between 800 and 1100 mm, and by significant excursions in temperature during the final stage of ripening of the grapes.
